EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia was an EU counter-migrant smuggling naval force, operating on the south-central Mediterranean Sea (2015-20). It is also the topic of my research. The magnet in the photograph is a gift from a former student. This student, who at the time was already working for the EU in Brussels, had happened on an operation Sophia information and promo-stand and brought this magnet back for me. I like how this magnet is just so perfectly random. Why does an EU military operation hand out a (fridge?) magnet and (beer?) bottle opener as promotional material?
