I initially started collecting cartoons to decorate my very first office as a new academic. It seemed like a fun way to make use of some of the empty wall space.
One of my favourites is “Terrifying creatures from outer space” by Jos Valdman which was printed in The Advertiser newspaper as part of a feature on job creation in the Australian space sector and which features “The Space Lawyer”. It was published in 2019, the same year that I published my first academic article on space law.
I use some of these cartoons in my international law teaching to simplify concepts, engage students, and prompt critical discussion of what message the cartoon sends (perhaps unintentionally) about the law.
